What Does Subitizing Have to Do with Development of Students’ Understanding of Number Sense? Subitizing is an under-realized, critical skill needed for number sense such as conservation, unitizing, composing/decomposing, place value, fact strategies, and arithmetic. Understanding these learning trajectories across TK-6/8 help educators diagnose student understanding and answer questions about what students need to learn within their developmental path. They had all taken Nutrition and Wellness, Advanced Nutrition and Wellness, and as Culinary Arts and Hospitality students, they were ready to take their learning to the next level. Their goal was to create a business that would allow them to become a self-sufficient class that reached out beyond the classroom while improving real-life skills. Classroom Management Tricks And Tips/Restorative Justice

Using Brian Mendler's strategies from a professional development I attended in Columbus, Ohio, I want to give some classroom tips and tricks that I have used over my last seven years of teaching. I want to present on the three different populations of students I have worked with: at-risk, high-achieving, and average students I have worked with in my career. I want to highlight strategies that have worked, failed, and give teachers time to submit common issues they are experiencing in their classroom and brainstorm ideas that can help change the course of their classroom dynamics. My session would focus on the following:

Fostering the Reader in All: Tips, Tools, and Strategies

As we go through school, we learn to read, and then we read to learn. All of us need to be readers-but sometimes, we may need different resources, supports, and tools to be successful readers. In this session, we will explore tools, resources, and strategies to bring out the reader in all of our students using accessible design, assistive technology, and principles of Universal Design for Learning. In the US, there are 6.7 million K-12 children with disabilities receiving special education services. Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) make up half of special education students, and 85% of the students with specific learning disabilities have a primary learning disability in reading and language processing. Given the likelihood that many of our students fall into these statistics, what are we doing to ensure all have an accessible, equitable, engaging learning experience? This fast-paced beginner session will explore the “why” and attendees will leave with immediate implementation of free/low cost simple tools for Chrome, Windows, and iPads to turn classroom worksheets, documents into accessible formats/instruction for independent student access. By the end of the session, attendees will emerge confident with facts to bust assistive technology myths and equipped with tools to support variability in reading and writing.
